The Blob must be one of the best movies of it's genre and time, I'll go even further and say it still holds it's own today and I'll sit down and watch the movie anytime it's on TV. The age of the cast as you say raises a smile but no different to 25-30 year olds playing highschool teens in the likes of Buffy, Smallville and OC etc.
Who would have thought Steve McQueen would go onto such great things and well turning down a percentage well hindsight and all that
