The Son of Ghoul is a horror host played by Keven Scarpino, and appearing on the Akron, Ohio based television show, The Son of Ghoul Show, where a B movie is presented along with comedy sketches.
Scarpino's original inspiration came from Ernie Anderson's Ghoulardi. Scarpino won a look-a-like contest for Anderson's successor, The Ghoul (played by Ron Sweed), in 1982. It was at this contest that he was given the title, "the son of Ghoul". Shortly thereafter, he began working at the Akron television station WOAC, where he became familiar with another Ghoulardi-inspired television host, the Cool Ghoul, played by George Cavender. Scarpino was able to get a job as a technician on Cavender's show, "Thriller Theater", and after some time on the show, was given small parts in sketches on the show.
Cavender suddenly departed from WOAC and Thriller Theater in 1986, and Scarpino, along with others, auditioned to become the show's next host. He was given the job, and hosted the show (later renamed The Son of Ghoul Show) from that point on. In 1995, WOAC was sold and switched to a home-shopping format. Scarpino then moved the show to the relatively new WAOH, where the show is currently broadcast.

Clive Barker's Karma?

Clive Barker, the famous author, filmmaker and painter's second film as producer after THE PLAGUE under his Midnight Picture Show banner, is getting a VERY limited theatrical release before heading straight to DVD.

Fansite shocktillyoudrop.com reports:

"Lionsgate is planning a limited 100 theater run of the Clive Barker adaptation on August 1st.

"This move fulfills Lionsgate's contractual obligation with production entity Lakeshore to give it some sort of theatrical run. The plan is to subsequently release Meat Train quickly down the line (October?) for a DVD release."

Here's where the karma part steps in. Clive and his producing partner, Jorge Saralegui, were largely responsible for having the creative team removed from THE PLAGUE in post production. THE PLAGUE was based on an original screenplay and not on any Barker material. I should know. I was both the writer and director of THE PLAGUE (along with my writing partner, Teal Minton). After we struggled for eight years to get the film made, Barker and Saralegui kept us out of the editing room once our contracts expired and re-cut the film from scratch into exactly the kind of film we were making THE PLAGUE in opposition to. And for their efforts, THE PLAGUE (misleadingly retitled CLIVE BARKER'S THE PLAGUE) was released straight to DVD and became, in many fans' opinions, an embarrassment for Clive's new Midnight Picture Show label. Not a great introduction, to say the least. Now that Clive's second film under his new banner is also going quickly to DVD, he's decided to start a grassroots campaign to get the film a wider theatrical release! Sound familiar?

Enter a website called spreadingtheplague.com; a site dedicated to getting THE PLAGUE: WRITERS & DIRECTOR'S CUT released. This cut of the film is completely different from Clive's frame-one re-cut. It is supported by the filmmakers, cast and crew, as well as noted film authors, journalists, film historians and Mr. Bill Butler, the magnificent DP of such films as JAWS, THE CONVERSATION, and FRAILTY (Mr. Butler was not invited by the producers to color-time his own work on THE PLAGUE). Is it possible that Clive's name above the title and involvement in a film is, in fact, the very reason these films turn out the way they do?

Perhaps taking a closer look at Clive's producing team, their past histories and reputations, might reveal something of importance and begin to answer this question.

In the meantime, please consider helping to support THE PLAGUE: WRITERS & DIRECTOR'S CUT (and Clive's karma) by going to spreadingtheplague.com to learn all about what happened on THE PLAGUE and to sign our petition (1235 signatures and counting). This is the cut of the film I'm guessing Clive and his people would prefer you never saw:

Who knows? Maybe all of Clive's films will have grassroots campaigns to fight the powers that be. You go, Clive!

Some fun stuff coming up latenight on TCM Underground. The first is Zombies of Sugar Hill from AIP, and then Death Line aka Raw Meat. Sugar Hill is goofy fun, and I recall the voodoo zombies looking like they had sparkly golf-ball eyes.

The latter film, Death Line, is genuinely good. Although fans shouldn't get too hyped about Christopher Lee being in it, as his part is a small yet key cameo, really. The standout actor in it is Donald Pleasence (Halloween) who is fantastic, although the protagonist couple he protects are not.

The Director of Death Line, Gary Sherman went on to make a horror gem called Dead & Buried, which many fans may have seen on the excellent Blue Underground DVD release. Unfortunately, he ended up almost killing his career with Poltergeist III.

Strother Martin plays the logical extension of his role as Newman's nemesis in Cool Hand Luke - a small town Satanic cult leader who acts like an evil, Shakespearean Foghorn Leghorn. Surprisingly atmospheric and effective for a low budget film, with interesting compositions, long tracking shots and dialogue-free passages of weirdness that could be from an early silent. I don't mean to overstate, but this is much better than lots of similar movies that came out around the same time that it appears to have been lost among.

The movie was an AIP release. It is a pretty dark and spooky movie that I highly recommend is u are a Price fan. Ill post the link to its IMDB page soo you can read the synopsis. I had no idea what the movie was about the first time watching it other than seeing an old trailer on youtube. It's worth the watch if you can find it. I know a lot of you have a copy. Michael’s a great guy and I’ve wanted to interview him for quite some time. So I think you will really enjoy this episode.

The Psychotronic Man 1979

Psychotronic

of or pertaining to a genre of low-budget movies that includes horror, fantasy, science-fiction, and underground films.

Of or relating to a genre of film characterized by bizarre or shocking story lines, often shot on a low budget.

Psychotronic is a film genre made up of horror films, spaghetti westerns, low-budget independent features, exploitation films) that was coined by author Michael J. Weldon, best known for his books, Psychotronic Encyclopedia of Film and Psychotronic Video Guide.

Weldon also published the magazine Psychotronic Video, with 41 issues starting in 1989. He has since ended publication due to financial restrictions.

The genre takes its name from the movie

The Psychotronic Man.

After seeing this movie, Michael J. Weldon created an extensive list of reviews of obscure quirky films that he felt were underappreciated by the mainstream and then marketed it as the “Psychotronic Encyclopedia.” The existence of the Psychotronic Encyclopedia prompted the creation of the Psychotronic Film Society at which point the term “psychotronic” fell into generic use for this type of movie.
